On Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 7:30 p.m., the Hoboken Quality of Life Coalition conducted its sixth year of presenting Hoboken Thanksgiving Awards. Three citizens and, for the first time, a for-profit organization were honored. The three citizens were lauded for their free contributions of time and talent for the betterment of the City of Hoboken. The fourth award focused on sustainability and utilization of new techniques in the workplace. The event was held at the Hoboken Historical Museum, Hudson at 13th St. There were over 45 people in attendance including the return of former awardees Leah Healey and Jim Doyle as well as Larry Henriques. the event was supported with a grant from PSE&G as well as donations of wine from Jospeh Branco owner of Room 84 on lower Washington Street, and Anthony Pino owner of Anthony David and Bin 14. A delicious finale came in the form of profiteroles from the French baker Nichole who owns With Love from the Cupboard an online bakery.

Recipients of the awards are as follows:

Community Service Award to Valerie D’Antonio for being a volunteer for many causes and on many committees.
Environmental Award, In Memoriam to Marj Laue for her efforts in the development of green gardens in the city.
Community Awareness Award to Mark Singleton for his extraordinary work involving the care of the poor and shelter for the homeless.
QLC’s Green Award to Jason Scott and Chris Viola, owners of The Taco Truck and restaurant for their “green” store and contributions to the city’s tree planting program.

Attached are reward certificates for the recipients:

The Hoboken Thanksgiving Awards were initiated in 2005 by the Hoboken Quality of Life Coalition as a means of expressing gratitude for the energy and talent provided by ordinary citizens who volunteer their time and talent without remuneration for the benefit of the city. “These awards provide an opportunity for the Hoboken community to bring its many-times unspoken expressions of thanks and gratitude to full voice,” says Helen Manogue, Coordinator of QLC. “The new QLC Green Award has been created in order to point out what a business entity can do to assist the city in reducing carbon dioxide emissions and clearing the air.”

Planting trees is just the beginning; caring for the fledgling trees is the next step and YOU can be involved.

The Quality of Life Coalition and our Committee for a Green Hoboken are seeking volunteers to “adopt” one (or more, if possible) of these new trees. YOU are invited to be a “Treekeeper” who will care for your adopted tree through the Spring of 2012. Your primary responsibilities are:

1. To provide 20 gallons of water per week through October 2011;
2. Advise the Hoboken Shade Tree Commission if a tree takes a turn for the worse by contacting Shade Tree Commissioner Steve Fahmie at steve34@gmail.com.

You will have the opportunity to select a tree(s) of your choice. Contact Steve Fahmie at the e-mail above giving you name, address, email and phone number. He, in turn, will contact you with a list of the new trees that are in your general vicinity from which you may select your adopted tree(s).

Thank you for responding to this opportunity to take a personal interest in how trees are able to grow and thrive in Hoboken. The neighborhood thanks you, the Quality of Life Coalition thanks you and the City of Hoboken thanks you.

The QLC is partnering with the Save the Youth Academy, Hoboken Housing Authority, and Hoboken P.A.L to raise funds for back-to-school supplies for the children living in the Housing Authority. We’re holding a Back-to-School Green is Cool block party on Saturday September 11th from 2 – 6 p.m. at the ball field on Jackson and 4th. The block party will kick-off the school year with a fun event that will educate the kids about the environment and allow us to hand out the supplies.

We’ve been lining up donated supplies that are environmentally friendly, but are raising funds to buy additional supplies and to throw the party. The “price” of admission requires the children to participate in a series of fun and educational games before entering the rest of the party. We’re educating the kids on why to use products that tread lightly on the environment.

We’re also teaching the kids about why they should recycle and why they shouldn’t litter. This project is an extension of an ongoing collaboration between the QLC and Save the Youth Academy to teach at-risk youth about why and how to protect the environment.

Please help out and click on the “Donate” button on our homepage and give what you can! It’s tax deductible. If you, your company, or organization want to do more, please click on “contact” and send us an email.

The Citizens’ Campaign presented its “Path to Political Party Service” seminar on Thursday, March 25 at 7 P.M. at St. Matthew’s Parish Hall. This course explained how local political party committees work and prepared over 30 interested citizens for the June 8 committee elections. The course was taught by an educator from the nonpartisan Citizens’ Campaign.

It is the second of four seminars the QLC and the Citizens’ Campaign plan to host.

What Do the Local Political Party Committee People Do?

Every district of every ward in Hoboken elects both a Democratic and Republican committeewoman and committeeman. The party committees exist to represent the interests of local voters to the party, and to raise funds and rally support for party candidates. The responsibility taken on by each committee person depends completely on the level of involvement they choose. Many run for committee to promote change in local government or to help build a political platform. Others see it as an introduction to the political process or a chance to socialize with politically like minded neighbors. The local committee people also represent Hoboken at the county level by helping to choose the county party leaders.

The June election is a great chance to dip your toe in the political waters. Only a few signatures are needed to get on the ballot and, depending on your district and party affiliation, getting just a half dozen votes may get you elected .

The goal of the Citizens’ Campaign in sponsoring this event is to inspire citizens to participate in the leadership of their communities and reverse the tide of government waste and corruption.

The first seminar in the Paths to Service series was presented December 17. Click on the video below to watch.

The Hoboken Quality of Life Coalition encourages all Hoboken residents to vote for governor, mayor, and the ballot question on Tuesday November 3rd. The QLC also encourages all voters to make an informed decision before heading to the polls. Voting is our civic responsibility and one of the most important ways we can all participate in democracy.

We’re offering non-partisan information to help you make an informed decision on who to vote for in Hoboken’s mayoral contest – a video of the latest Hoboken Mayoral Candidates’ Forum. For the third time in 2009, a Candidates’ Forum took place in the auditorium of Our Lady Of Grace School, this time on Wednesday, October 14 featuring the seven candidates running for mayor in the November 3, 2009 election. All seven candidates participated to the rapt attention of the 250 people in the audience.

Earlier in the year there had been a council-at-large candidates’ forum and a mayoralty forum as well as a mayoral debate between the two candidates in the run off. The resignation of Mayor Peter Cammarano prompted the need for a new election and the mayoral forum. The forums are sponsored by Our Lady of Grace /St. Joseph Parish, People for Open Government, The Church @ Hoboken and the Quality of Life Coalition. The proceedings of the October 14 forum were taped and may be viewed in their entirety on Channel 78 (running alternately with city council meetings) and by using the link below.

Regarding ballot question 1, the League of Women Voters has listed both the pros and cons of voting YES. You can read their ballot analysis and decide for yourself.
